We visited for a family wedding - a beautiful hotel and nothing too much trouble for Bel and her housekeeping and catering teams. Rooms really lovely with class touches - a generous host!less
We stayed overnight while visiting family. The George & Dragon has been renovated fairly recently. The room and bathroom were well furnished and high quality. There are also some nice touches with a kettle, tea and milk, also a courtesy bottle of sloe gin if you fancy a nip. We didn’t have dinner but the breakfast choice was creative and well prepared. The hotel has a nice bar. Overall the hotel was higher quality than we anticipated.less
We came for lunch, on a lovely sunny day. Very few patrons, in spite of a beautifully-refurbished pub with several inviting eating areas, including a terrace. The menu looked very interesting, especially as my friend is a vegetarian and there seemed plenty of choice for her. But sadly the execution of the dishes was disappointing . We both ordered ‘small plates’. The ‘Old Winchester Cheese Croquettes’ were 4 tasty, bite-sized pieces. £7.50 My ‘ Roasted Heritage Carrots with honey-whipped ricotta and toasted pumpkin seeds’ arrived without any ricotta. This was rectified by the kitchen by adding a lump of ricotta, neither whipped nor honeyed. The carrots themselves were one degree above raw, very chewy. Hard to believe they’d been roasted! So, a plate of almost-raw carrots, £8.50. The ‘Grassroots Beef Short Rib Crumpet’ was a pile of tasty, tender shreds of beef, dumped on top of a supermarket crumpet, and garnished with tiny rings of pickled onion, microscopic pieces of gherkin - and a nasturtium leaf. £10.00 Service was pleasant but seemed slow, given the few patrons there were. To be fair, my carrot dish was omitted from the bill. However, we won't be returning - sad, as it is a very nice place, with a lovely private dining 'library' room, and a large room with wood-burning stove, as well as the terrace and conservatory areas.less
Such a shame...a beautiful place, perfect even....the menu reads so well ergo we had such high hopes...the service was so slow I wanted a nap! I ordered....actually I feel so bad leaving this review....all I will say is I won't eating at this establishment again...the poor waitress was left with no support from the manager on a busy sunny lunch time....and the chefs were working backwards....I left hungry!!less
Despite best efforts of lovely staff and nice location the food was terrible. One choice of steak was sirloin and very tough. My plaice was small and overcooked although the mash was good. Calamari greasy. Wine list confusing. Wouldn't go back.less
